01 perspective and resonance
Some people say that Chinese people abroad are representatives of China, but TCSL teachers are not "spokesmen" for China on sensitive issues.
As we all know, the ability of cross-cultural communication is one of the purposes of language education, but also the necessary accomplishment of a qualified teacher of Chinese as a foreign language. When communicating with students, especially in the face of sensitive topics, Chinese teachers must stand in the "third perspective", just like a translator, we are only communicators for both sides. As an outsider to see their own culture and the motherland, as an outsider to understand and integrate into the other side of the culture and thinking, this is conducive to the emotional resonance between teachers and students, to avoid prejudice and misunderstanding.
Foreign students say that you have been living and teaching in a foreign country for fear of being infected and not coming to Chinese class.

01 视角与共鸣

有人说,国外的中国人就是中国的代表者,但面对敏感问题对外汉语老师不是中国的“发言人”。

我们都知道,跨文化交际能力是语言教育的目的之一,更是一名合格的对外汉语教师的必要素养。跟学生交流,特别是面对敏感的话题时,汉语老师一定要站在“第三视角”看问题,就像一个翻译一样,我们只是双方的沟通者。以局外人的身份看待自己的文化和祖国,以局外人的身份理解和融入对方的文化和思维,这样才有利于师生之间产生情感上的共鸣,避免偏见和误会。

外国学生表示因为担心被感染不来上汉语课,一直在国外生活和任教的你“一脸懵逼”,“有口难言”,“气急败坏”?

一周前我读过一篇文章,《别再说武汉人了,他们只是想活着》,文章大概讲的是,我们不应该盲目排挤武汉来的人们,他们逃出武汉也是不想自己被感染而已。

既然我们能对同胞们有这种宽容和体谅,那对那些不那么了解疫情的外国学生们为什么就不能理解和包容呢?学生爱惜自己,注重防护本就是值得肯定的做法,我们作为老师,对于学生出于自身健康安全考虑的想法应该给予理解。




Soothe emotions and relieve anxiety
Zhang Ming, the head of the Chinese mission to the eu, once said: "the biggest opponent to control and defeat the epidemic may not be the virus, but panic."
Foreign students fear or ostracize Chinese people in large part because they do not understand the spread of the virus and the epidemic. The teacher should let the students have a certain understanding and understanding of the new crown pneumonia, in order to calm and reduce the students' anxiety.
First, let the students know that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the prevention and control of the epidemic. With the Chinese government to take strong measures, strong material base of science and technology in China, the Chinese people to unite the spirit of the populace, and the response to SARS, swine flu, avian influenza, ebola virus, etc. The beneficial experience, we have determination, confidence and ability to win the epidemic prevention and control of war.
Secondly, the new coronary pneumonia is mainly transmitted by respiratory droplets and contact transmission. Chinese teachers and other Chinese living abroad have been living abroad for a long time and have not been in close contact with the infected people, so they are less likely to be infected and spread the virus.
Finally, the new coronavirus spreads quickly. However, proper wearing of masks, frequent hand washing and hygiene can greatly prevent the invasion of the virus. In this special period, we can also wear masks in class to minimize the chance of infection and protect ourselves.

02 安抚情绪、减轻焦虑

中国驻欧盟使团团长张明大使曾说:“控制并战胜疫情的最大对手可能不是病毒,而是恐慌。”

外国学生害怕或者排斥中国人,很大一部分原因是他们不了解病毒和疫情的传播。老师要让学生们对新冠肺炎有一定的了解和认识,才能安抚和减轻学生的焦虑情绪。

首先,我们要让学生们知道,中国政府高度重视疫情防控,成立了从中央到地方、全方位、多层次的防控体系。凭借中国政府采取的强有力措施,中国强大科技物质基础,中国人民团结一致共度时艰的精神,以及此前应对“非典”、甲型H1N1流感、禽流感、埃博拉病毒等积累的有益经验,我们有决心、有信心、有能力打赢这场疫情防控阻击战。

其次,新冠肺炎主要通过呼吸道飞沫传播以及接触性传播,在海外的汉语老师及其他华人长期生活在国外,也并没有与感染病毒者密切接触,所以他们身上感染和传播病毒的可能性比较少。

最后,新冠病毒传播速度较快,但是,合理佩戴口罩,勤洗手,保持卫生,能很大程度地防御病毒的入侵。现在特殊时期,我们上课时也可以佩戴口罩,尽量减少感染的机会,保护好自己。



03 many angles, tell the truth
Most of the time, the reason foreign students ask questions about the outbreak is not to provoke us or embarrass us. They just really want to know the truth about the outbreak.
After all, in their eyes, Chinese teachers are the closest to the truth. The information received by students may be a one-sided news viewpoint processed by the media, which may lead to confusion, misunderstanding and even prejudice among students. Like the "Chinese girl eating a bat" video, which was apparently irrelevant but misreported by the public.
You may say, we are not in wuhan, we have not been to the outbreak area, we do not know the truth. But what can be our Chinese teacher of eighteen martial arts? What we need to do is to be objective, to provide students with as comprehensive and truthful information as possible. We should not only quote the reports from xinhua or People's Daily, but also cover up the situation of the epidemic and beautify the practices of the Chinese people. We should also let students see the views and practices of various countries and parties. Only in this way can students see the problems in an objective and rational way. 03 多角度,讲事实

外国学生提出关于疫情问题的初衷,大部分的情况下,并不是为了激怒我们或者故意让我们尴尬,他们只是真的想了解疫情的真实情况。

毕竟在他们眼中,中国老师是他们身边最接近事实真相的人啊。学生们接受到的信息可能是被媒体加工过的、片面的新闻观点,这容易让学生产生迷惑、误解甚至偏见。像是那个“中国女孩吃蝙蝠”的视频一样,明明毫不相干却被大众误传。

你可能会说,我们不在武汉,也没去过疫情爆发地区,我们也不了解事实真相啊。但有什么会难道我们十八般武艺的汉语老师呢?我们要做的,就是保持客观,就是尽量给学生提供足够全面、真实的信息。不仅仅是引用新华网或人民日报的报道,也不能隐瞒疫情情况、全面美化国人的做法,我们还应该让学生看到来自各国、各方的观点和做法,只有这样,学生们才能更客观理性地看待问题。老师们可以参考一下以下的视频,从中得到启发。

Suggestions and reminders
The health and safety of our students is our top priority. Therefore, we should remember to give students some advice and remind of the epidemic prevention. In special times, teachers and students should also wear masks to protect themselves and others.

Extension and discussion
While you're at it, you can also have an interesting and exciting free discussion in class on the topic of new pneumonia. The teacher can ask the students to collect relevant information about the new pneumonia before class, and discuss and communicate in groups in class. 05 延申和讨论

趁着这个时事话题,你还可以就新冠肺炎的话题在班上展开一场有趣而精彩的自由讨论。老师可以让学生在课前自己收集新冠肺炎的有关资料,在课上分小组进行讨论交流,老师作为主持人,给予学生适当的引导和建议。这样不仅能让学生们对疫情有更深入的了解,也能以此锻炼学生的口语能力和中文思维

当然,前提是老师在之前一连串的“暴击”中没有败下阵来……

以上这些回应都会或多或少增加学生们的不满和反感情绪,而且不能很好地给学生树立正确防疫的意识,都是不可取的回应方式。

其实,在现实教学中我们还会遇到很多关于敏感话题的讨论,在《国家汉语教师证书》面试中,教师如何回应教学中的敏感话题也是考试的一个重难点。
